Mahershala Ali has a rare ability to make stillness feel dramatic. In Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, the two-time Academy Award winner brings that gift to an action thriller that has considerably more on its mind than the next confrontation.

Writer-director Bassam Tariq blends striking combat, family grief, and questions of faith into a film that earns its intensity through character. For WAVKLB, Ali’s extraordinary performance alone makes this a must-see.

The Story: A Father With Nowhere to Hide

Ali plays Latif, a devout Muslim and professional killer in Houston whose life is overturned by the death of his wife, Khadijah. Suddenly responsible for their three children, he faces an immediate crisis when his infant daughter cannot tolerate formula. Finding breast milk becomes an urgent mission just as dangerous people and unresolved obligations threaten his family.

The premise sounds almost absurd until its deeper purpose becomes clear. Latif can confront formidable opponents, but he cannot fight his way through grief or guarantee his children the comfort they need. His teenage daughter Fatiha, portrayed by Adia, is navigating loss while watching her father struggle to remain the steady presence the family requires. The movie connects those intimate circumstances to action without treating parenthood as a distraction from the real story. Parenthood is the story.

Mahershala Ali Is the Reason to Watch

Ali’s physical commitment gives Latif credibility as a man capable of extraordinary violence. Yet what stays with you is his emotional precision. A pause before an answer, a guarded expression, or the fatigue in his body reveals a grieving parent behind the disciplined exterior. He communicates fear, devotion, and self-doubt without demanding sympathy or explaining every feeling aloud.

That balance matters because Latif is not an uncomplicated hero. He believes in a religious and moral code even as his profession forces troubling contradictions. Ali never smooths those contradictions away. He allows the character’s tenderness toward his children to coexist with decisions that should make viewers uncomfortable. It is a demanding performance, and he makes the difficulty look effortless.

The supporting cast sharpens those conflicts. John Cho plays Pastor Hwan, a militant Christian whose certainty about righteousness becomes dangerous. Giancarlo Esposito portrays Abdul Malik, an imam who challenges Latif’s understanding of faith and responsibility. Together, they keep the film’s religious questions grounded in personalities rather than speeches.

Adia also deserves recognition for giving Fatiha an independent emotional life instead of reducing her to a device for her father’s redemption.

The Vision Behind the Camera

Bassam Tariq is both the director and sole credited screenwriter of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. Born in Pakistan and raised partly in Houston, he has built a career exploring identity, family, community, and Muslim experiences that rarely receive this kind of attention in mainstream American cinema.

His documentary Ghosts of Sugar Land won the Short Film Jury Award for Non-Fiction at Sundance in 2019. He later directed Mogul Mowgli, the acclaimed 2020 drama he co-wrote with Riz Ahmed about a British-Pakistani rapper confronting illness, ancestry, and ambition.

Tariq was also previously attached to Marvel’s long-delayed Blade project with Ali. Their eventual collaboration here is more intimate and distinctive than a conventional franchise vehicle.

Houston is not an interchangeable backdrop. Tariq uses its neighborhoods and intersecting religious communities to place Latif in a recognizable American landscape. The film’s title, inspired by an Islamic teaching emphasizing a mother’s importance, underscores the absence shaping this family’s lives.

Ambition, Action, and Critical Acclaim

The action sequences have force and carefully controlled choreography, but Tariq refuses to make violence feel consequence-free. He is more interested in what a confrontation exposes about Latif than in simply adding another victory.

The film asks whether religious conviction can become a justification for harm and whether protecting loved ones requires something more difficult than physical strength.

Critics have responded enthusiastically, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 97 percent critics approval rating at publication. RogerEbert.com praised its unusual combination of action, religious inquiry, and family drama, while the Los Angeles Times highlighted the story’s unpredictability and Ali’s complexity.

Some reviewers have questioned whether the ending fully resolves the ideas introduced earlier. The criticism is fair, but an imperfect resolution hardly diminishes the film’s originality or emotional force.

The WAVKLB Verdict

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother succeeds because it understands that grief changes everything, including a person’s sense of duty. Its violence can be thrilling, but its most affecting moments are the ones that reveal what a father owes his children beyond protection.

Go see this film, especially for Mahershala Ali. His performance is commanding, vulnerable, and remarkably human, transforming an unusual action premise into something memorable. Tariq gives him the space to be more than formidable, and Ali rewards that trust in nearly every scene.

Go see this film. Mahershala Ali delivers one of the year’s most impressive performances.
