Welcome Back to Hillman: A Different World Returns for a New Generation

Now Streaming — A Different World: Welcome Back to Hillman
Netflix’s A Different World sequel brings Hillman College back for a new generation, following Deborah Wayne — the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert — as she begins her own college story.
Series: A Different World
Streaming: Netflix
Premiere: September 24, 2026
Season: 10 Episodes
Setting: Hillman College
Nearly 40 years after A Different World first introduced audiences to Hillman College, the fictional HBCU is back in session.
Netflix’s new A Different World sequel series centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. The connection immediately links the new series to one of Black television’s most recognizable couples, but this return to Hillman is designed to be more than a nostalgia trip.
A New Generation Arrives at Hillman College
Deborah enters Hillman hoping to create an identity separate from her famous parents. That becomes complicated when your mother and father are two of the school’s most recognizable alumni.
Maleah Joi Moon leads a new A Different World cast that includes Alijah Kai as Rashida, Chibuikem Uche as Kojo, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir and Kennedi Reece as Hazel.
Together, they form a new circle of Hillman students navigating friendship, romance, family expectations and the uncertainty that comes with trying to figure out adulthood.
That premise feels right for A Different World. Hillman was never simply a backdrop. College represented the space between childhood and adulthood, where relationships changed, careers began taking shape and students started discovering who they wanted to become.

The Original A Different World Cast Returns
The strongest connection to the original series comes from several familiar faces returning to Hillman.
Kadeem Hardison returns as Dwayne Wayne, Jasmine Guy returns as Whitley Gilbert, Darryl M. Bell returns as Ron Johnson and Cree Summer returns as Freddie Brooks. Debbie Allen, whose creative influence helped shape the original series, also returns as an executive producer and director.

Their presence gives the sequel history without requiring the original characters to become the entire story. Hillman has a past, but the new students are being given room to establish their own identities.
Hillman Has Changed — And That’s the Point
The world facing college students in 2026 is considerably different from the one Dwayne, Whitley, Freddie and Ron encountered during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
That difference could become one of the new show’s greatest strengths.
The original A Different World became significant because it allowed young Black characters to discuss identity, racism, relationships, education, politics and adulthood while still remaining funny and entertaining.
The A Different World Netflix sequel now has an opportunity to examine what college life, independence, dating, friendship and identity look like for a generation growing up with social media, constant connectivity and very different expectations about the future.

Welcome Back to Hillman
The biggest test for Netflix’s A Different World may be whether audiences eventually become as invested in Deborah and her classmates as they remain in the people who came before them.
That is how the sequel can truly honor the original.
The goal should not be to reproduce another Dwayne, Whitley, Freddie or Ron. Hillman works when its students arrive carrying expectations, uncertainty and family baggage and slowly become their own people.
For longtime fans, the doors are open again.
